Chartreuse de la Verne

La Chartreuse de La Verne - a jewel tucked away in the Maures Massif .

Founded in the 12th century, the Chartreuse is tucked away in the heart of the Maures Massif, in the middle of a cork oak and chestnut forest. It takes centre stage with its stunning rays of golden sunshine.

Destroyed several times by fires, the Chartreuse has been rebuilt each time. The current buildings largely date from the 17th and 18th centuries, when the key features (doorways, pediments and archways) were restored in Maures serpentine, a hard, green stone. Since 1983, it has been home to a Monastic Family of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno, who have taken a vow of silence.
