Summary:
Erotic passion and murderous vengeance follow one another in this medieval epic. Mark, King of Cornwall, his wife Iseult and his nephew Tristan navigate between danger and delight in a classic love triangle, accompanied by a motley crew of dwarfs, maids and lepers who bring humour and colour to the tale.
The troubadours entertained the assembly at the court of Eleanor of Aquitaine in the twelfth century with this story, but its origins go back much further. It originated with the Picts in Scotland before travelling through oral tradition to Wales, Cornwall and Ireland. Wagner and the poet Matthew Arnold drew inspiration from it for their works; even today, the legend inspires playwrights, authors and film-makers who renew it in their own way.
