“Is our life anything other than a series of preludes…?” Liszt responds with a series of contrasting soundscapes, flamboyantly orchestrated to depict five moments in a life—perhaps “a hero’s life.” Guillaume Connesson’s marimba concerto, illuminated by refined timbres and invigorating rhythms, establishes a dialogue between the orchestra and the most subtle of percussion instruments. Since 1824, Beethoven’s Symphony with Chorus has been the benchmark against which all innovative music is measured. After three sumptuous movements, the finale—humanistic, declamatory, and effervescent—speaks to all of humanity.
