Saint-Bernard park

Saint-Bernard park

Surrounding the Villa Noailles, the garden St Bernard was built between 1924 and 1930 by the villa’s architect Robert Mallet-Stevens. A ‘cubist garden’ was also conceived by architect and landscape designer Gabriel Guevrekian. Under the villa, Charles de Noailles starts working in 1925 on a narrow terrace Mediterranean garden where he cultivates local plants such as lavender and rosemary as well as rarer species like angel’s trumpet (datura), silverberry, bignonia, wisteria, pittosporum, heliotrope, helichrysum italicum. In 1973, the town purchases the garden, which offers an unbeatable view on the entire coast.

Presentation

The Vicomte de Noailles, a patron of the arts but also a passionate botanist, designed this terraced garden with exotic and Mediterranean species. Sophisticated rare species that tolerate the heat particularly well stand side by side with garrigue plants (wisteria, rockroses, rosemary, pittosporum and climbing plants). The garden is teeming with life, and the breathtaking sea view adds an extra dimension.
Sustainable tourism
During the Roaring Twenties, the Vicomte de Noailles had his villa built by the architect Mallet-Stevens. At the same time, this botanical enthusiast laid out a garden of Mediterranean species below. Now owned by the town of Hyères, it is open to the public. It's a pleasure to stroll between the various narrow terraces where pittosporums, rosemary, acacias and lavender grow, as well as remarkable trees including a 300-year-old almond tree and a 200-year-old jujube tree. In addition to its botanical riches, this park offers an exceptional view of the islands of the Parc National de Port-Cros.
