David Locke, a British reporter traveling in an African country, assumes the identity of his hotel roommate. The man, Robertson, has died of a heart attack and bears a striking resemblance to the journalist, who then begins attending the European meetings of the man he discovers was an arms dealer. In Barcelona, Locke/Robertson meets a young woman who decides to accompany him in his new life, but what was supposed to be a liberation for him turns out to be an escape.
