Musical Theater - The Soldier's Tale - Opera Hors les murs

A musical fairy tale by Igor Stravinsky, performed by the Toulon Opera Orchestra. Conducted by Raphaël Merlin.

It was 1918. No one knew when the war would end. There was no large hall, no vast audience. So why not keep it simple? Just a few instruments with contrasting sounds: violin and double bass, clarinet and bassoon, cornet (trumpet) and trombone, drums. Two or three characters: the soldier, the devil, the princess (silent—she’s a ballerina), plus a reader (narrator). A traveling theater production, even performed outdoors, for a naively profound take on the Faust myth. You should never sell your soul to the devil, even in the form of a little violin!
