Unlike her sister Armande, Henriette dreams of love and wants to marry Clitandre. While her father, Chrysale, supports this union, her mother, Philaminte, seeks to force the pedantic Trissotin upon her because of his supposed expertise in science and literature…

— Emma Dante speaks of the encounter between two worlds: the ancient world embodied by men in wigs and period costumes, and the modern world of emancipated women. While the former, emerging from a trunk of yesteryear, will slip into the world of fiction, dusted off by the servants, the latter will find themselves dominated by ancient codes, stripping them of their aura of modernity.
