Movies - Comédie-Française: "Les fausses confidences"

Thwarted love, dishonor, unspoken desire, impossible emancipation… This season, the Comédie-Française at the Movies explores the great human passions through four masterpieces of the French repertoire.

Dorante is madly in love with Araminte, a wealthy widow, but his humble background prevents him from openly courting her. His former valet, Dubois, then devises a scheme: to have Dorante hired as steward so that he can get close to her and, perhaps, win her affection. But Madame Argante is pushing her daughter to marry a count… Everything hinges on Araminte’s heart.

— Without Dubois to confront them, the characters would remain trapped in their fears. This is what resonates with Christophe Honoré in this play, in which he reunites with the troupe he directed in 2020 for his adaptation of Marcel Proust’s *The Guermantes Way*. As a writer, filmmaker, and director, he is interested in the inner workings of texts. Here, he approaches Marivaux’s language for the mystery it conceals—far from any pomp, at its very core. In doing so, he seeks to shed light on the labyrinthine emotions that course through these characters—already mature yet vulnerable—who struggle to admit their desires to one another.
