Lyric opera in three acts by Georges Bizet, sung in French with French surtitles. Conducted by Victorien Vanoosten. With the Toulon Opera Orchestra and Chorus.
Bizet's only opera to remain in the repertoire, in the shadow of Carmen. It's tempting to detect the forerunners of the magnum opus in this early work, if "youth" means anything to Bizet, who died at the age of 37. A certain Basque drum, so often summoned to the banks of the Guadalquivir, is already a sign of the exotic Sinhalese touch; but something biting, a certain brutality, are perhaps the beginnings of that musical realism of which Bizet was the inventor. In an overabundance of melody, the aria "Je crois entendre encore", a veritable "romance of memory", digs into the sky.
