Arthur Hamilton, a middle-aged man frustrated by his monotonous life, one day receives a phone call from a friend he thought was dead. The friend suggests that he reinvent his life—just as he himself has done—by faking his own death. Hamilton eventually agrees to meet with a mysterious organization. He signs a contract that allows him, in part through plastic surgery, to change his identity and start a new life on a California beach. But it isn’t quite what he had imagined, and difficulties will soon begin to pile up.
