Born on July 4, 1900, John Sims arrives in New York hoping to become “somebody.” He ends up as just one of hundreds of employees in a dehumanizing office. The film follows his marriage to Mary, their simple joys and tragedies, including the sudden loss of their daughter. Broken by grief and professional failure, John comes close to suicide before realizing that his survival depends on his acceptance: he is just an anonymous face in an indifferent, yet living, crowd.
