A young woman, a dancer in search of lightness, thought she knew everything about her grandfather Berek, an Auschwitz survivor. But she is about to discover his secret struggles
Through a family saga woven from investigations, sometimes comical encounters, and deeply moving testimonies, *Rester Envie* reveals a little-known chapter of postwar history. Drawing on archival material and songs reimagined by Rosemary Standley, this production brings to life a series of figures who rekindle a legacy that remains very much alive.
Deported during the Vel d’Hiv roundup, Berek lost his wife, his children, and his health. But here, his granddaughter paints a contrasting portrait: that of a man who viscerally rejected the role of victim. As he rebuilt his life, he would say, “It’s better to be envied than pitied.” As if loss had to be countered with a relentless desire for life and beauty.
