Presentation

Born in Paris in December 1951, Olivier Bataille graduated from the Ecole Supérieure d'Arts Graphiques de Paris in 1978, and worked as an interior architect and designer until 1992.

In 1990, in Carrara, Italy, he was introduced to direct-cut marble sculpture. After attending several workshops in Paris and Amsterdam, he settled in Cotignac in 1997.
Now a member of "La Maison des Artistes", he devotes himself entirely to sculpture, working mainly in direct-cut colored marble.Searching for a shapeless stone in a quarry and giving it shape could be the essence of my approach.

My work is deliberately kept to a minimum, and the choice of stone is of the utmost importance. This choice is already a creative gesture, as my direct-cut work enables me to continue what nature's accidents have begun. Keeping the rough aspect of the stone, working on certain parts of it, voluntarily leaving the trace of the tools are all part of an approach that seeks to translate a free inspiration, without models, detached from the result.

My work is to sculpture what sketching is to drawing.

The result is a sculpture evocative of a Humanity petrified in marble.
