Presentation

The collection of ancient and modern art, most of which was built up during the 19th century, presents a diversity of genres and movements, notably around the theme of landscape. Particular emphasis is placed on 19th-century painters from Marseille and Toulon (Loubon, Guigou, Courdouan, Nardi...).
Another highlight of the collection is the Orient and Mediterranean travel, with a particular focus on painters from Provence (Ziem, Tournemine, Montenard...).

From the 1980s onwards, acquisitions turned towards contemporary art. The collection includes works representative of various major movements, such as New Realism (Arman, César, Niki de Saint Phalle, Martial Raysse...), Minimalism (Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt) and Supports/Surface (Daniel Deneuze, Claude Viallat...), as well as major international artists (Daniel Buren, Gerhard Richter, Pat Steir...).

At the heart of the historic library is a curiosity cabinet featuring ethnographic and archaeological objects. Works from the library's holdings are available alongside the cabinet, enabling visitors to deepen their understanding and discovery of the collection.

A graphic arts cabinet allows fragile works to be displayed in rotation, such as the photographs (over 500) and drawings (over 600) that make up the MAT collection.
