The town of Saint-Tropez has been dominated by its Citadel since the early 17th century. For centuries it was the most important defensive element between Antibes and Toulon and is one of the few remaining monuments, of this size, on the Var coast.
This listed historic monument was built in 1583 by the Maréchal de Villars. Its keep, which is its most remarkable element, was completed in 1607.
This solid hexagonal shaped construction is flanked by 3 round towers, surrounded by a ditch and accessed via a drawbridge.
It is topped by a terrace and also features a central courtyard. The entire citadel is protected by a system of moats and counterscarps.
These slopes originally formed a “glacis,” which was devoid of all vegetation, from where troops could “bombard” enemy ships that got too close to the walls.
The ramparts of the citadel house a pretty garden in which peacocks roam freely under the shade of the pine trees.
The City of Saint-Tropez is proud of its rich maritime past and has converted the keep to a museum entirely devoted to maritime history. Here, visitors can find out more about the everyday life of men and women who, century after century, shaped the town, creating the Saint-Tropez that we see today.
